A powerful healing life force permeates the universe. It can be seen in starfish regenerating a severed limb; in animals licking their wounds to heal them; in grass growing through concrete; in cedars growing a vertical new trunk from the fallen one. Healers and individuals in every culture have tapped this healing force to help themselves and others. Our libraries are filled with books by individuals who have experienced the healing force of the universe and are excited about teaching us how we can experience it too. It seems every author has a different way of accessing this healing ability.
Remember the story from India of the blind men describing an elephant? The man who “feels a leg says the elephant is like a pillar; the one who feels the tail says the elephant is like a rope; the one who feels the trunk says the elephant is like a tree branch; the one who feels the ear says the elephant is like a hand fan. . . .” Each one is right; yet no one is wrong.
So it is with the universal healing force; it is enormous and can be accessed at many different points. Whether you access it through Reiki or Healing Touch or Reconnective Healing® or prayer is irrelevant. One point of access does not invalidate other access points. Training is not necessary to tap into the healing force. However, people who are unaware of their healing gifts can be trained through courses and practice.
Every class, every teacher and every client I have had has contributed to my understanding, openness and ability to interact with the healing energy that surrounds us. Having said that, no matter who the practitioner is, all healing is self-healing. The surgeon sets the bone, but the body heals it. There are gifted healers among us who have “discovered” the healing energy flowing through them and there are healers who, through training and experience, have “uncovered” the healing energy flowing through them.
My belief is that we all have the innate ability to heal ourselves and to facilitate the healing of others. However, not everyone wants to be a doctor; not everyone is called to be a healer. I believe I could become an astrologist through training and practice, but I don’t want to. If I want a reading, I go to someone who is passionate about astrology.
We are fortunate to have western and eastern medical knowledge available to us; we are also fortunate to have energetic interventions readily available. You may choose treatment from either of these or both. Whichever you choose, I recommend you seek out practitioners who are passionate about their work and view our amazing bodies with awe.
I clearly saw my wonderful, black and silver, miniature schnauzer Zelda sitting on the bank of the river as we sped away in the boat. I shouted, “We can’t leave her” and woke up.
